Beamed across the country via radio, it was the fictional story of an alien invasion of the USA by Martians, commencing their attack in New Jersey. 

Drawn in by its perceived realism many, many American listeners paniced and thought what they were listening to was real.  Some mistook the news as coverage of a German invasion.
